Fitrah grocery hampers to help at Eid

- | Staff Writer

THE South African National Zakah Fund (Sanzaf) will be distributing 24 000 Fitrah grocery hampers to Muslim families across five provinces in celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr over the weekend.

Eid-ul-Fitr, marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, and Fitrah is an obligatory charity that aims to ensure no Muslim person goes hungry or has to worry about food security.

Eid is expected to be celebrated on Saturday or Sunday. The hampers will be distributed in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal as well as Gauteng.

Sanzaf national communications officer Nazeer Vadia said apart from being a month of intense spirituality, Ramadan was also a month of intense humanity.

“A few months ago, when we were beginning to plan for our busiest month of the year, nobody ever thought that by Ramadan we would be facing some extraordinary moments in modern history. Our overriding aim is to make an impact where it counts in these demanding times,” said Vadia.

He said that during Ramadan the fund had distributed 30 000 hampers and served more than 150 000 meals benefiting more than 300 000 individuals, bringing joy to those less fortunate.

“Through hard work and strategic planning, we have managed to make an impact and help those in need. Covid-19 affects us all and recognises no national, class or wealth boundaries. We have to stay in touch with what is happening right now.

“As we sit at home in lockdown, fortunate and thankful for the closeness of our families, for the warmth of our shelter and for the guarantee of a meal, we have to turn in all humility to those millions less fortunate than us,” Vadia said.
