How about a ‘graveyard of fallen monuments’?

- MUHAMMAD OMAR

WHILE history is being re-oriented and literally taking a more oriental flavour, watch how many “Western celebrities” like British Prime Minister Boris Johnson proclaim some Eastern (in his case, Turkish) heritage.

The question is, who will be important and who will not? Maybe a statue of Steve Jobs, Sam Walton [Walmart founder] and Ray Kroc [McDonald’s] is overdue.

Dropping statues of slave masters is now a world-wide trend, with even

Belgium and the UK being affected. Moscow had a wonderful solution.

The Soviet/Communist era is akin to apartheid. Repressive and inhuman. Few souvenirs from that era and mainly for foreign tourists.

All the Soviet-era statues were removed and housed in a park called “graveyard of fallen monuments”.

Almost akin to Verwoerd’s statue in Orania.

Maybe the world should follow these examples.
