Protests staged in 20 Thai cities
THOUSANDS of Thais staged anti-government rallies across 20 cities yesterday, undeterred from the rain and arrests of several activists the day before.
Seven activists were arrested after the Saturday rally in Bangkok ended peacefully, according to the group Thai Lawyers for Human Rights. One of the key protest leaders, Panupong Jadnok, was taken away by plain-clothes officers after they produced an arrest warrant.
The demonstrations, now in their fifth consecutive day, are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha’s government, as well as reform of the monarchy and a new constitution.
As the movement continues to gain traction, Thai protesters have been doing their best to elude the authorities. They are using social media to communicate to their followers and monitor police movements.
