THE body of Thokozani Mthethwa, a young lifeguard stationed at Muizenberg beach, has been found following an extensive three-day search.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the body of the 23-year-old seasonal lifeguard was found on Monday on the shore between Sunrise and Mnandi beaches.

“Members attached to the SAPS divers in conjunction with SAPS air wing used the helicopter to do aerial searches along the coastline from Mnandi beach until Kommetjie main beach. “Thereafter, SAPS divers also performed a coastal patrol on quad bikes and vehicles from Muizenberg until Mnandi beach without any success.”

Van Wyk said at about 5pm, law enforcement officers informed the diving unit of a body that had washed ashore.

He said there was no need for divers to attend the scene and an inquest case was opened for investigation.

Mthethwa disappeared in the water on Saturday afternoon after he fell off a rescue sled being towed by a Jet Ski.

They were en route to a rescue operation to assist a kite surfer in distress at St James beach.

A search operation involving lifeguards immediately commenced, with assistance from the National Sea Rescue Institute, law enforcement, police, Disaster Risk Management, and Emergency Medical Services.

Mayco member for community and health services Zahid Badroodien said: “The City expresses its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, as well as his colleagues during this difficult time. This is the first staff member that the Recreation and Parks Department has lost in the line of duty. His life will be honoured among the few exceptional men and women who sacrificed their own lives to save others.”

He said the City was saddened by the outcomes of the search undertaken.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to all parties who came together and spared no resources, tirelessly working together in order to find Thokozani since he went missing.

As a result of large gatherings being restricted due to Covid-19, details of a memorial service for family and staff are being carefully considered.

“The impact that Thokozani has had on our lives will always be remembered. We pay tribute to him for his bravery and service and hope that as the season progresses, we will be spared any further loss of life,” said Badroodien.

Condolences have since poured in on social media.
