Celebrating sobriety

LONDON: Sir Anthony Hopkins drank his last drink 45 years ago and has not touched alcohol since.

Movie star Hopkins, 82, has announced that he is celebrating his record on New Year’s Eve.

“Forty-five years ago today, I had a wake-up call,” Hopkins said. “I was heading for disaster, drinking myself to death. I’m not preaching, but I got a message – a little thought that said ‘Do you want to live or die?’ and I said ‘I want to live.’ And suddenly the relief came and life has been amazing,” he said.

He admitted he’d had doubts about his decision but encouraged fans, saying that they should continue to fight – and the strength would eventually come. He said 2021 would be “the best year”.
