Alvon Collison was truly “a man of the people”

-

I WAS saddened to learn of the recent death of entertainment icon, Alvon Collison; ("Alvon Collison's partner pays moving tribute", Cape Times, January 25).

Alvon Collison's half-century popularity as an entertainer transcended his phenomenal midseventies success as Pharaoh in the long-running Musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

In the years following, Collison continued to produce and star in a series of very popular and entertaining variety shows, commemorating the Festive Season, Valentines Day, Mothers Day, etc.

I had the pleasure of attending many of these shows, along with his loyal following of supporters, who guaranteed a "Full House" at nearly every performance.

Throughout his stellar career, Alvon Collison was ably supported by his long-time companion and partner, Faried Swartz, who served as co-producer and musical director of the shows, and an accomplished vocalist- often as a performer.

Although blessed with a very talented cadre of "regulars" for his shows, Alvon Collison often found opportunities to showcase the talents of new and lesser-known performers; another indicator of this man's generous spirit.

Alvon Collison was truly "a man of the people".

His engaging onstage presence will be missed and he will long be remembered for his familiar and well-deserved accolade, "Mr. Entertainment".
