‘Two Hues’ shines on global stage; bags awards
“The film is testimony to the challenges faced by women in South Africa, and the world
CAPE Town-created short film Two Hues continues to make waves on the global stage, having clinched the “Best Women Empowerment Film” award at the Berlin Short Film Festival at the weekend. It was the film's third international award since its release on the film festival circuit in January. Last month, it was awarded a best director prize in London.
Co-directed by Weaam Williams and Dominique Roxanne Jossie, the film centres on gender-based violence, and the emotional and mental trauma caused by it. Lead character Natasa conveys the narrative as a bipolar photographer, who is a silent victim of rape.
“The film is testimony to the challenges faced by women in South Africa, and the world. May we continue to raise our voice against gender-based violence, physical, verbal and emotional. May we continue the narrative of Muslim women and our struggles in a society which feels the need to legislate our bodies either via sharia, or in France via law,” said Williams.
Two Hues is currently being developed into a feature film, with the assistance of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). “The NFVF has been the biggest supporter of my work to date, however, there are certain individuals inside the NFVF who are counter-productive to the growth of the independent film industry.”
Two Hues can be viewed in Sub-Saharan Africa on CineMagic which is hosted on the MTN platform. The link is available on tribalalchemy.co.za
“The short will launch on a global streaming platform later this year. I am truly grateful for the accolades bestowed on the film, an affirmation of the quality of the work and our talented team.”
