Online dating scam bankrupts woman

LONDON: A British woman is facing bankruptcy after losing more than $150 000 through an online dating scam. Rachel Elwell, from the UK’s West Midlands, said the man claimed he lived nearby and that he had gone abroad for an engineering contract in Ukraine.

Elwell, 50, said the man convinced her with documents and pictures that he needed money for issues he was facing and said he had been taken captive by loan sharks.

Elwell has now created a Go Fund Me page and has already received a little over $319. Her target is to raise $138975. According to Forbes, many online dating scams originate in Nigeria.
