Outdoor and adventure sports should be introduced in schools

-

AROUND 30% of all teens suffer from depression. There are many factors that contribute to this, and a lack of exercise is one of them.

This is because most people haven't found a sport that they enjoy, and generic sports such as soccer, basketball or running don't work for most people, yet this is all that schools offer.

Another downside to these sports is most people stop participating in them as soon as they leave school.

I suggest that schools start encouraging more nature- and adventure-based sports such as

surfing, climbing, biking and sailing.

Not only are you more likely to continue sports like these outside of school but they also allow a much broader spectrum of people to enjoy sport.

Let's take a look at climbing as an example, since that is closest to my heart. Even though it is a bit of a fringe sport, it is highly accessible. All you need to start off is a pair of climbing shoes, a chalk bag, and maybe a harness.

Cape Town has three climbing gyms, all at reasonable prices and some of the best outdoor climbing in the world.

Climbing not only gets you extremely fit, exercising every part of your body, but it also promotes problem solving, coordination and balance.

The people are friendly and there is a close-knit community.

Sport gives people a sense of purpose. It gives them something to enjoy and a community. It makes you feel good. KAI SAMUELSSON | Constantia
