AFTER viewing video footage of a dog fight in progress, Cape of Good Hope SPCA inspectors, police and law enforcement descended on a property in Manenberg where they were able to rescue two dogs and identify one of the suspects from clothing worn in the video.

The animal welfare organisation said after seeing the footage on Monday evening, its inspectors made an application to the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court for a warrant to remove the animals.

The next day, law enforcement and the SAPS accompanied COGH SPCA chief inspector Jaco Pieterse and inspector Mark Syce to the Manenberg property where the fight allegedly took place.

There they were able to find the original video evidence of the dog fight on a suspect’s phone and identify him from clothing worn in the video.

“He was arrested on the scene. They were also able to locate a second suspect who was detained at the Manenberg police station as well,” the organisation said, adding that the suspects were understood to have multiple existing criminal charges against them including attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

“Both dogs found on the property have been taken into the care of the SPCA and have already undergone veterinary assessment. We thank all those who are brave enough to come forward and report crimes against animals.”

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said a 26-year-old man was arrested and appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of cruelty to animals.

The SPCA offers a R5 000 reward for information that leads to successful prosecution of those involved in dog fighting. Reports can be made anonymously by calling 083 326 1604. Anyone with information of abuse of animals, including dog fighting, can call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
