A 17- and 23-year-old are expected in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court today for being in possession of zip guns.

Police spokesperson Andrè Traut said the Flying Squad made the bust at the weekend.

“With our focus on serious and violent crimes in this province, members of the Flying Squad reacted on a tipoff and conducted a search at a residence in Vera Street, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein yesterday.

“The search led to the discovery of two homemade firearms, also referred to as zip guns, and the subsequent arrest of two male suspects aged 17 and 23.

“The suspects will face the charges against them (today) in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court,” Traut said.

Separately, three suspects, aged between 37 and 42, appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges relating to possession of hijacked vehicles and stolen property.

On June 2 members attached to the Bellville Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit were contacted by Macassar police to assist at a chop shop where they already arrested a 37-year-old man on a truck hijacking case.

The members took over the investigation, which led them to arrest two more suspects.

“Members found six vehicles worth more than R1 million, reported stolen or hijacked, stored on the premises,” police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said.

“Western Cape acting provincial commissioner Major General Thembisile Patekile lauded the members for their diligence.”
