Report requires all of us to ‘re-wild’ SA
LAST month, Parliament's high-level panel (HLP) of experts for the review of policies, legislation and practices in matters of elephant, lion, leopard and rhinoceros management, breeding, trading, hunting and handling released its report.
The report's recommendations go beyond the terms of reference for the HLP, requiring environmental authorities (and all South Africans) to, for instance, “re-imagine protected areas” and to “re-wild” South Africa.
And because “it's all connected” the HLP has now undertaken to change consumption patterns in China and Southeast Asia, reverse climate change and restructure the global political economy.
I closely watched the members when making a presentation on their recommendations.
