ALTHOUGH overwhelmed by the idea of potentially achieving his goal of becoming an international rugby star, Jeandre Overmeyer, a Grade 11 learner from Hermanus is ready to give it his all.

Jeandre, 17, who has cultivated a love for the sport since primary school, said the opportunity to represent his country as part of the SA Warriors team at the United Emirates Dubai Sevens tournament was a dream come true.

However, to nudge the eighth-man player closer to his dream a reality, Jeandre needs funding for the trip in September.

“For me it’s a huge privilege and honour to have the opportunity to represent my country during the tournament as part of the SA Warriors team. I believe that being a part of the team in Dubai will give me an opportunity to be scouted,” he said.

Jeandre and his mother, Janice Overmeyer, have set up a BackaBuddy campaign to raise R60 000 to cover all costs for his 10-day tournament. They have also ramped up their fund-raising by selling chips and sweets.

“Jeandre is a dedicated, talented rugby player and this is what he really needs, the chance to prove himself and the opportunity to achieve his rugby goals. It is a bit of a challenge with regard to funding but he has our full support as we want this to materialise for him, said Overmeyer.

“He has been diligent in helping raise funds by selling luxuries to peers at school and although it doesn’t bring huge profit, every bit helps,” his mom said. Jeandre said his love for rugby has grown since he started playing in Grade 4, and each year he has set new goals for himself to achieve.

“Last year I took a bit of a knock by not achieving my personal goal to make the Boland squad for the Craven Week team due to Covid restrictions, but it hasn’t held me back. I am still setting goals to become a professional rugby player, which includes the dream to play for the Springboks.

“During the trip I look forward to meeting our Blitzboks, as we will be playing the opening tournaments for the international games and that is very exciting,” said Jeandre.
