A SIXTY-six-year-old man is expected in the Simon’s Town Regional Court today for allegedly sexually assaulting a dog.

The woman who caught him says the incident has evoked past trauma and she asked not to be named.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said a case of bestiality was being investigated after the 66-year-old man was arrested on Friday night. The dog has since been moved to an animal shelter.

According to the woman, she had just returned home from visiting her brother when she saw her mother’s boyfriend – allegedly with his pants down – on top of the dog.

“Usually, if I had gone somewhere and returned my dog would excitedly meet me by the gate.

“She's very protective, especially when it comes to me. When it did not appear, I assumed it might not have heard me. Weirdly, even after entering the house, it was just quiet and I started looking for her in the rooms,” the woman said.

She said after opening the door to her mother's room, the dog jumped from underneath the accused.

“The expression on my dog's face was indescribable. It was as if it was relieved that I arrived. He was lying on top of my dog and quietly dressed himself when the dog ran out to hide. I was frightened and shocked. At the time my mother was visiting my aunt. I knew someone from TEARS and called her because I didn't know what to do, and she referred the case to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA,” said the woman.

Inspector Mark Syce and police were dispatched to the home to investigate. On arrival, Syce found the family dog violated and in need of veterinary care, the SPCA said.

The dog was taken to a veterinarian for an examination and to secure DNA samples for further testing.

The 35-year-old dog owner said her three-year-old old pet was a gift.

“The case is still at Simon's Town Court. I hope justice will be served this time,” she said. Bestiality is a criminal offence. Cruelty reports can be made in confidence by email to inspmanager@spca-ct.co.za, or telephonically by calling
