FIFTEEN suspects are expected to appear in the Philippi Magistrate’s Court today for allegedly being in possession of R500 000 worth of sheep liver that was apparently stolen.

At the weekend members of the Maitland Flying Squad received a tipoff that suspects were carrying boxes in the area. Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the officers went to an address and found that a truck, bakkies and an SUV were loaded with boxes of sheep liver reportedly stolen in Killarney Industrial area.

“The load was delivered in Philippi, where people collected the boxes again. A total of 2 225 boxes of sheep liver were seized with a value of R500 000.

“Fifteen suspects aged between 25 and 35 were arrested and detained in a case of possession of prohibited stolen property.

“They are due to appear in the Philippi Magistrate’s Court on Monday,” Van Wyk said,

Separately, three murder suspects are expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court today following their arrest in connection with the murder of three men in their twenties and the attempted murder of another man in Paarl East on Friday night.

Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa said the four men were shot in Rocky Street. “Upon arrival, police found four men who had been shot. Three were already dead and the fourth one seriously injured.

“The police’s 72-hour activation plan was instituted for the pursuit of the suspects and Anti-Gang Unit detectives initiated an investigation into the triple murder and attempted murder.

“The suspects aged 22, 23 and 26, apparently with links to gangs, were subsequently arrested later on Saturday. Police in the area continue to monitor the area for further incidents,” Potelwa said.
