TOKYO: A Japanese former top bureaucrat aged 90 was sentenced yesterday to five years in prison due to his negligence over a car accident which occurred in 2019 in Tokyo.

According to the ruling from the Tokyo District Court, Kozo Iizuka, a former chief of the nowdefunct Agency of Industrial Science and Technology under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, was judged guilty of running a red light, killing a woman and her daughter and injuring nine, after mistaking the gas pedal for the brake.

Iizuka had insisted on his innocence during his trial, stating that a mechanical issue made the car run out of control.
