Bid to buy wheelchair lift for brave Cayley – and help others

A TRIP to school for special needs pupil Cayley Habelgaarn is not without its challenges.

Her mother’s heartfelt plea now is for the public to donate towards a fund-raising campaign for a wheelchair lift to be fitted to Cayley’s scholar transport.

Charnay Habelgaarn, from Rustdal in Kuils River, said that after Cayley suffered a near-fatal drowning about eight years ago, her daughter acquired physical challenges and their lives were changed forever.

“Cayley attends a special school which is not within our area and as a result, she must make use of the school transport.

“Unfortunately, the bus she travels on does not accommodate wheelchairs. It therefore takes two adults – my dad and myself – to lift her on to the bus and to secure her on the seat.

“I fear for the future as she will only grow bigger and our support grows older,” said Habelgaarn.

She described Cayley as a “passionate, energetic, kind, sincere, humorous, and fiercely inspirational 11-yearold girl”.

She has started a BackaBuddy fundraising campaign with a target of R150 000, which could fund two wheelchair lifts – one for Cayley’s scholar transport and another for a school in need of it.

“I hope that with your help Cayley will have a smoother day-to-day life and that children like her will enjoy the same pleasure as she’ll be able to enjoy. The funds collected will fund two bus lifts, as well as the installation of the lifts. “One lift will be allocated to Cayley’s school and the other to another special school that needs it.”
