Pronunciation is on the tongue of the speaker
THE editorial column in Thursday’s Cape Times, in which J.P. Smit is criticised for not at least trying to pronounce someone’s surname.
In my experience, the pronunciation of a surname to the satisfaction of the person requiring it, is not possible. Few South Africans can adequately pronounce the surnames of all the different languages.
I have found that sometimes the insistence on someone getting the pronunciation right, is used as a means of humiliating the person who is trying but cannot succeed because it is not their home language.
Inclusivity would not demand it or consider it disrespectful if a person was not brave enough to attempt it in a public setting.
Instead of being critical, should we not all be understanding of each other’s lack of ability in pronunciation?
