MARK RUBERY CHESS

The game of bridge is often indulged in by chess players after the conclusion of their games, even Karpov and Korchnoi-for a long time bitter antagonists-had been known to partner each other. The acerbic Dutch GM, Jan Donner, shared his observations of both games: “Playing a game of chess takes far more time than playing a game of bridge. The chess player’s eye is staring into a different time. Because he is completely absorbed by the momentary, a special clock must preserve him from rigidifying. Bridge players play quickly. Their reasoning follows a course that is soon ended with a conclusion, a decision. It is undoubtedly this speed in bridge that is such a relief for chess players and that causes them to be unfaithful to their own game-but never for long.”

These words were written in 1968, since then chess has speeded up considerably and the absence of adjournments combined with the preparation for the next game via one’s laptop means less opportunities for a leisurely game of bridge, but perhaps instead a few a quick hands of Texas Holdem on the Internet. While on the subject of poker, the late American GM Walter Browne (6-time US Champion) won close to $200,000 by placing highly in two WSOP tournaments. This is perhaps close to what he had garnered from playing in 30+ years on the American chess circuit….

Today’s puzzle is a classic mate in two problem composed in 1881. What is particularly remarkable is that after White’s key first move each of Black’s 19 legal replies allow a mate in one!

WHITE TO PLAY AND MATE IN TWO MOVES

Chess has also helped me to understand that without an objective evaluation of a position, it is impossible to achieve good results not only in chess but in your life as well. Undoubtedly chess has a very important pedagogic value. It develops memory, logic and fantasy. It improves our reactions, attention and capacity for work in our lives. It also helps us develop a deep respect for our opponents. – GM Boris Alterman
