A HOST of activities are scheduled to honour Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah Tutu for their two decades’ of philanthropic work in support of Tygerberg Hospital’s paediatric patients.

The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust’s (THCT) Tutu Tygers has partnered with the Dean of the St George’s Cathedral, Father Michael Weeder – as well as Patta, a global streetwear and sneaker boutique based in Amsterdam – ahead of Trust patron Tutu’s 90th birthday on October 7.

Patta will reveal a commemorative T-shirt celebrating Archbishop Tutu’s 90th birthday, with 100% proceeds of sales going to the THCT.

The Tutus in 2001 supported the creation of the Trust and continue to back its mission.

Trust chief executive Jason Falken said: “More than 25 years after he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the Struggle against apartheid, we feel highly privileged to be celebrating Archbishop Tutu’s 90th birthday.

“We want to honour his service to our nation and, through us, to the children of our nation, like never before,” said Falken.

Father Weeder said the Cathedral of St George the Martyr had over time strived to be a place where everybody was welcome.

“The Cathedral’s relationship with the Tutu Tygers and the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust personifies the ideals of Archbishop Desmond’s caring nature.

“Children inadvertently create a certain lovely chaos in our lives.

“Having children associated with the Cathedral in an intentional way; with their laughter, presence and resonance, is a perfect match,” Father Weeder said.

To coincide with Archbishop Tutu’s 90th birthday, and Leah Tutu’s on October 14, THCH will be hosting an extra-special celebration on the steps of the St George’s Cathedral and other venues in central Cape Town.

Falken said activities on October 7 would include the presentation of beautiful birthday messages and gifts to Archbishop and Leah Tutu by the many beneficiaries of their patronage work, the singing of many Happy Birthdays, and the naming of four new Tutu Tygers.
