Help young mates fulfill their chess dreams

- ODWA MKENTANE AND MARSHA DEAN

ONE hundred young people from across the province have been given the opportunity to fly the South African flag high next month in the African Schools Individual Chess Championships in Nairobi Kenya. The only thing standing in the way for some is money.

While players were selected by Chess South Africa, each individual is liable for his or her own expenses of up to R50 000 including registration, accommodation, flights, attire for the event and an accompanying adult in some cases.

“Considering the different backgrounds these children come from, not everyone is financially able to cover all the expenses of attending the event.

“For many it will be their first time travelling out of the country, let alone by themselves,” said a concerned parent, who asked to remain anonymous.

Isigcawu Primary School in Crossroads was also desperately appealing to the public to assist in funding 13-year-old Sisipho Gedu, who had been selected.

Sisipho, who has been playing chess for more than two years, said she is determined to win in Kenya and her dream is to compete on a global scale.

“I am happy that I will be competing internationally and it is a dream come true. The sport helps you to think quickly in difficult situations and also be able to consider the consequences very carefully.

“I've been playing chess for three years now and it keeps me grounded. Ever since I started playing the sport I am excelling in maths – there is a big difference between before and after I joined the sport,” said Sisipho.

School sports co-ordinator Andile Ndevu said the school has challenges regarding the sport because, unlike other sports, chess is costly and needs a lot of funding.

“We are so proud of Sisipho and regardless of her community background, she managed to fight against all odds. Finances are an issue when it comes to funding the sport, there are a lot of things that are required such as kit, accommodation, especially when travelling abroad,” said Ndevu.

Meanwhile, provincial Cultural Affairs and Sports Department spokesperson Tania Colyn said the federation may apply to the department for assistance with ad hoc funding.

“In terms of ad hoc funding, the department has assisted 17 athletes thus far and is awaiting approval for some more.

In terms of codes, any code may apply,” said Colyn.
