DA LEADER John Steenhuisen’s visit to Ukraine refers.

Steenhuisen commented, after he landed in Ukraine, “We owe it to the people of Ukraine to tell the unfiltered truth about what is taking place there so that the world can stand united in bringing this injustice to an end”.

His visit and statement reek of hypocrisy.

In order to score political points against the South African government’s response to the Russian invasion, Steenhuisen cynically visits Ukraine and expresses his support for the people of Ukraine.

Will he visit Palestine, Yemen, Syria or even suffering communities in Africa to be a voice for the voiceless people?

If he is serious about the effects of the Russian invasion and the ongoing occupation of parts of Ukraine, showing solidarity with war victims, the reason humans are forced to flee their homes in Ukraine, then he must also visit the occupied Palestinian territories and Gaza strip.

The brutal occupation of Palestine by the Zionist regime in Israel severely deprives Palestinians of basic human rights. Moreover, for over 70 years, the Israeli regime has continuously committed inhumane crimes against the indigenous people of the land – the Palestinians.

After visiting Palestine and publicly condemning the Israeli aggression and crimes of apartheid against Palestinians, can we trust or accept his statements regarding Ukraine.
