Guinness record-holder swims in aid of animals

EDGING closer to his 200th open-water swim from Robben Island to Blouberg, Guinness World Record holder and endurance swimmer Howard Warrington is driven by his love for animals.

Warrington at the weekend completed his 196th 7.4km swim in aid of animal rescue and the cause of the SPCA.

Warrington said he and his wife Elmarie, as boat skipper, and their dog Lily as chief motivator and shark spotter, share a love for animals and wanted to give voices to those who do not have it.

“We have a passion for animals. There is support for people but not so much for animals who also often go through trauma. I have the privilege, because I love sport so much, to give my support to the SPCA and the work they do.

“It can be a very tough swim but knowing that you are also doing it for a good cause is what drives me,” said Warrington.

The SPCA said it was experiencing “significant financial challenges”.

“Our Animal Hospital is facing significant financial challenges and so, with every powerful stroke, and every rand you give in encouragement, Howard’s helping us turn the tide so we can continue to provide life-saving treatment to animals in need,” the organisation said.

“With glassy seas and perfect conditions, it was a spectacular start to the countdown towards his historic 200th swim –something nobody else has ever achieved.

“Warrington was supported by his wife, Elmarie, as skipper, their rescue dog, Lily, as chief motivator and shark spotter, and close friend Charl du Plessis, who ensured Warrington’s safety throughout the swim.

“Open water swimming in cold sea temperatures, wearing only a Speedo, is no easy feat and it comes with risks. But Warrington is prepared to take them because it’s all in aid of saving animal lives.

“Warrington (is) our very own Aquaman with a heart of gold.

“He’ll soon be the only man in history to complete the open water endurance swim from Robben Island to Blouberg 200 times.

“And he won’t only be making history, he’ll be saving lives with every stroke he gives during his 7.4km, 2-4-hour-long endurance swim,” the SPCA said.
