Toyota’s luxury brand, Lexus, has been relatively quiet of late, but a few weeks ago the Japanese firm launched its most daring model yet into the local market. The LC500 marks a bold step for a marque that trades heavily on executive sedans and SUVS.

The LC500 is a striking GT with Lexus’ signature details such as the spindle grille and angular head- and taillamps. Short overhangs, a long bonnet and large alloy wheels underline its dynamic credentials.

Under that bonnet lies a naturally aspirated 5,0-litre V8 that spins to 7 300 r/min. Based on the engine in the Lexus RC F models, the LC500 boasts peak outputs of 351 kw and 450 N.m of torque. Lexus claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of less than 4,7 seconds and the coupé also boasts the very first 10-speed automatic transmission available on the local market. It’s a torqueconverter auto that allows manual shifting via magnesium steering-mounted paddles and delivers power to the rear axle.

A drive mode selector allows drivers to set the vehicle’s responses, including the noises emitted from the active exhaust, and the suspension layout has a multilink setup front and rear, along with a limited-slip differential acting through 21-inch alloys to ensure optimum grip.

As you would expect of a range-topper, the LC500 is chock-full of standard equipment, not least of all a completely digital instrument binnacle, similar to that found in the LFA supercar, figure-hugging front seats and a 13-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. The LC500 comes with a four-year/100 000 km service plan.
