FUTURE STEERING WHEELS

Although cars of the future will most likely drive themselves, steering wheels won’t disappear soon. We covered Jaguar’s removable Sayer steering wheel last year and now ZF is working on a similar unit. It recognises gestures on the steering rim and con rms them on the central screen. For example, a tap on the rim can sound the horn and a swipe in a certain region activates the indicators. The central screen also informs the driver if the vehicle is in autonomous mode. As the display screen is centrally mounted, a new airbag deploys from the back and covers the screen during an accident.
