Car (South Africa)

Over to you

-

I’ve had the pleasure of driving and owning numerous cars, including a Honda S2000, Porsche Boxster S, Ford Focus RS and Mercedes-amg A45. What I’ve found is, where some vehicles deliver my desired driving experience, others fail.

I have affection for the sportscars of my youth and enjoy driving and searching for cars with a speci c personality. With this said, I am quite fussy when it comes to cars; I want to drive and not have the car drive me. I believe many modern cars are too accomplished to be very exciting.

Their performance gures are used for bragging but we can’t really use all that power on the road. This is why I’ve sold so many of my cars because most of them you can enjoy only on the track.

Following a prolonged search for my ideal fun-todrive car, I nally found what I was looking for.

The vehicle in question was written off by many people due to its unimpressive performance gures, but those are the guys who have never driven one. I don’t blame them; I used to be one … until I took it out for a test drive.

The vehicle that I so love and enjoy driving everyday is my Mazda MX-5. It is astonishing and I now understand why it has been the world’s bestselling sportscar.

It is truly unfortunate we are so biased towards car brands and power gures that we cannot appreciate a car for what it is. Mazda South Africa has discontinued the MX-5 Roadster manual due to poor sales gures, which is a shame. For me, the manual box in the MX-5 is undoubtedly one of the best in any car.

I also have a BMW Z4 M in the garage but guess which key I grab rst?
