I am the owner of a Honda Jazz VTEC with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and am impressed with the performance. It is also a pleasure to drive. After reading the September 2018 issue, I’m puzzled by the negative comments regarding these ‘boxes in the Honda Ballade and Civic. Are there problems with them I should know about? ANDRE KOCK Jeffreys Bay CVTS are an acquired taste, as the impression of slip is ever-present during hard acceleration, plus the engine stuck at maximum engine speed makes quite a racket. However, a CVT suits a conservative driver who values smoothness and economy over performance.

We have not heard about mechanical dramas with Honda CVTS except they are sensitive to oil-change intervals (a specific, expensive oil from Honda) and can judder when the oil gets old or the wrong spec is used.
