VEHICLE SAFETY RATINGS
The Carte Blanche segment on 25 November 2018 regarding vehicle crash-safety ratings was a real eye-opener; most South African motorists and prospective vehicle buyers are uninformed about vehicle safety standards. It was stated by the Automobile Association and global NCAP that the SABS national regulator safety ratings are well below that of international standards.
May I suggest CAR lists the Global NCAP ratings in CAR Guide as well as in the specifications of the road tests conducted in the magazine. I know it is not possible to list every vehicle, as many have not been evaluated for SA.
Also, regular explanatory articles regarding these ratings and associated safety matters will be interesting and educational. I am sure this will be beneficial to motorists and may even lead to fewer motor-accident fatalities and serious injuries. Safety, as we all know, is one of the many key objectives of your fantastic magazine. BRIAN RICHARDS Hartenbos
[Great suggestion, Brian. If you page through CAR Guide you’ll notice we’ve taken away the EURONCAP results – they’re often irrelevant to our market because of different safety equipment tted to vehicles sold here versus in Europe – and replaced them with Global NCAP scores. We look forward to adding info to more vehicles as the programme matures – editor.]
