THE LINEAGE
South Africans missed out on the first edition of Suzuki’s small wonder but the following two generations reached our shores and a pristine example of each joined us on the day of the shoot. The enthusiastic owners were asked what they valued most about their vehicles and if they would consider buying the new version.
Suzuki SJ410 (1981-’98)
CAR test: March 1984 Engine: 1,0-litre, 4-cyl, petrol Trans: 4-spd manual Power: 33,5 kw Torque: 73,5 N.m Mass: 840 kg 0-100 km/h: 32,90 sec Top speed: 112 km/h Fuel index: 9,9 L/100 km Price: R8 890 (March 1984) Owner: Gavin Wileman
The SJ410 was the best small 4x4 in its heyday and I respect its legendary go-anywhere ability. I love the fact it is so mechanical with manual locking front hubs, no power steering, etc. I really like the new version but would never sell the SJ. Perhaps the two of them would fill my perfect two-car garage.
Suzuki Jimny (1998-2018)
CAR test: July 2009 Engine: 1,3-litre, 4-cyl, petrol Trans: 5-spd manual Power: 63 kw Torque: 110 N.m Mass: 1 084 kg 0-100 km/h: 13,72 sec Top speed: 145 km/h Fuel index: 8,64 L/100 km Price: R179 900 (July 2009) Owner: Hugo Coetzee
I value off-road performance and owned three Pajeros before I bought my 2018 Jimny. It is the most fun vehicle I have ever owned, has proper 4x4 capability, offers value for money and even has a lengthy warranty. I have already ordered the new Jimny, so if anyone knows of a potential buyer for mine, let me know.
