LAND ROVER LETDOWN

-

Where have all the ruggedness, value for money and off-road capability gone?

Since the departure of the Defender and Discovery 4, I’ve found the range rather disappointing. In late-2010, we purchased our first Land Rover: a Discovery 3 V6 S.

With genuine off-road ability, a huge boot and decent fuel consumption, this was all our family needed. In fact, we liked it so much, we decided to buy a Disco 4 V6 SE in 2014. It was perfect for school runs, family excursions and some off-roading. As soon as we’d purchased the 4, we began to wonder what the fifth-generation would be like, given our amazing experiences with two of its predecessors.

When the 5 made its debut in early March 2017, the figures were disappointing. A million rand for the base model, optional seven seats and air suspension, and all models were equipped with low-profile tyres. The latter did not live up to the brand’s off-road heritage. I am really disappointed. Land Rover’s products either cost an arm and a leg or have too much bling. I’m sure many will agree.

Maybe the manufacturer is targeting a new market. Despite my age, I prefer old school. Please, Land Rover, bring back the Defender.

Thanks for the amazing magazine! JORDAN WEBSTER (15) Hillcrest [Fifteen-year-old me also loved the Defender, Jordan, and a V8 110 was one of the cars in which I learnt to drive. Hopefully the upcoming Defender emulates what Suzuki has done with the new Jimny and retains the much-loved character that draws fans from such a young age – editor.]
