KIA SONET 1,5 EX

- Driver: Sean Parker Sean_parkersa

Month two with the Kia and the little Indian-built Sonet has proved popular with the team. CAR photographer Peet is routinely pressing me for the key when heading to a photoshoot. A highlight for him is the 392-litre boot that swallows all the camera gear and then some.

Another big fan is CAR editor Ray who praised the strong naturally aspirated 1,5-litre engine and the gearbox’s snappy manual gear changes.

My praise for the Kia is more rudimentary. Our modern world is full of convenience and sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference. The Sonet’s sunglass holder – within easy reach in the ceiling above the driver and passenger – might seem arbitrary to some, but I adore the convenience. It even has a soft inner lining to protect the lenses. When I hopped into several other test cars during the month, I missed having a secure spot to pop my shades.

One aspect of the Sonet I have been frustrated with is its weak halogen headlights. They simply do not offer sufficient visibility at night (certainly compared with some of Led-equipped test cars we’re accustomed to) and I am forced to use the front foglamps to increase brightness.

Apart from that, the Sonet hasn’t put a wheel wrong and performed admirably at our recent driver-safety course. Fitted with ESC, ABS and EBD, the little Kia felt secure on Killarney’s slippery, pockmarked skidpan. The Masterdrive exercise left me feeling more confident on the road, knowing how well the Sonet’s safety systems work in tough conditions.
