The Mazda mojo of former decades may have waned among a wave of proficient rival brands from all corners of the globe, but its products remain highly impressive. The CX-3 is a prime example.
The styling is nothing special and neither are the credentials of a 2,0-litre, four-cylinder engine and six-speed auto ’box. However, it is the sum of these parts that elevates the package into something rather outstanding. The power output is easily the best of this quartet and fuel consumption is much better than expected, thanks to its Skyactiv technology combining Otto and Atkinson cycles.
On our fuel route during the 2021 test, we returned an impressive 7,00 L/100 km. The result is a powerful engine with a fuel index of 7,92 L/100 km that is close enough to the CX-3’S less sporty rivals.
The six-speed auto transmission works well, but can hold on to lower gears for too long after an overtaking move. It must also be noted that the CX-3 is the least Suv-like offering in this particular gathering, sitting more on the hatchback end of the spectrum in terms of its packaging. This ends up being something of a double-edged sword for the
Mazda, as evidenced in its relatively compact boot and
160 mm of ground clearance.
It is, however, the most powerful and dynamically adept car here, fitting in neatly with Mazda’s sporting ethos.
