Volkswagen introduced the T-cross at precisely the right moment. The motoring fraternity was already drifting away from low-slung hatchbacks to cars boasting added ride height and a much-admired SUV image. Supplemented by the latest styling, sales took off. The underpinnings of the T-cross remain relatively modest with the 1,0-litre, 85 kw engine and the engaging seven-speed dual-clutch transmission doing duty.
The interior finish took some criticism as cheaper materials started appearing, but an optional styling package with colour-coded interior trim helps lift the ambience. Our test car was finished in metallic orange and matching interior elements. The rear bench slides to allow legroom and luggage accommodation adjustments, and interior space is good for a car this size. While the switch to lower-cost interior plastics had been implemented, other features were more pleasing to the eye.
Performance from the wellestablished three-cylinder is on a par with its class and the 200 N.m from 2 000 r/min means plenty of low-end punch.
Functionality remains good and they are still sought after as classy and appealing crossovers. Although our test unit was shod with optional 18-inchers, the standard 16-inch wheels will provide a more cosseting ride.
