In 2019, Suzuki added a 1,4-litre turbopetrol engine with 103 kw for those who required more oomph than the capable, but lowerpowered, naturally aspirated 88 kw 1,6-litre. This made a significant difference. With a lot more spec, these added to the price. All models are worth considering and apart from a slightly vague steering feel, are solid vehicles for the long haul. Unlike the previous-gen model, the newer Vitara wasn’t conceived as a capable off-roader, but rather as a comfortable, economical all-rounder that would appeal to a broader audience, leaving the role of dedicated adventurer firmly in the Jimny’s more than capable hands.

The ground clearance of 185 mm is fine for a crossover and space is plentiful. Low mileage 1,6 GL models sell for around R180 000, while the sportier GLX versions add around R100 000 to the ticket. The GLX models have considerable extra kit, including 17-inch alloys, LED daytime running lights and headlamps, auto lights and wipers, climate control, park distance control including a rear camera, and roof rails. In 2022, the range was simplified and all GL models were dropped. Take note of the power difference if you are tempted to buy the more affordable version, especially if you live at altitude. The cars have timing chains, so at least there is one less service item when it comes to maintenance costs.
