Like the 3008 it followed, the 2008 provided modern comfort features and good space utilisation together with increasingly handsome styling packages. The previous generation used a 1,6 petrol or a 1,6 turbodiesel. The 1,6 HDI engines are very economical, but were slowly phased out in 2021 when diesel engines fell out of favour owing to emission regulations. The new generation uses a downsized engine featuring a three-cylinder 1,2-litre turbopetrol. Some issues with these engines may cause concern with owners. Valve operation used a timing belt running wet in the engine instead of outside and dry. Original change intervals were every 180 000 km, but owing to initial failures, this was reduced to 100 000 km or five years. The quality of the belt improved after around 2018, so most of the issues should be sorted out, but it is still best to have the belt inspected annually. If swelling of any kind is detected, it can indicate problems. If it should fray and break, it can cause damage not only to pistons and valves, but also by clogging the oil ways, pick-up filter, oil pump and the like. Accessory belts, also, should be changed every 40 000 km and spark plugs at the same time, especially if you should detect a power drop-off. While it is strikingly styled and fun to drive, the 2008’s I-cockpit facia arrangement is an acquired taste, so spend time behind the wheel before deciding.
