Yet another performance cult car to wow South Africans and many others, the STI was bred on numerous rally stages over the years. The fact that our last test of a STI was in 2014 says something about the relentless pace of evolution. Perhaps it is testimony to how Subaru’s priorities have changed over time. Other manufacturers have been making hay in the sunshine and producing serious competitors. Look no further than Subaru’s part-time partner in Toyota and its Yaris GR, as well as the Corolla GR that took part in this year’s Shootout. The WRX STI’S trump cards are its all-wheeldrive, flat-four boxer engine and slick manual gearbox. The Tokyoby-night styling and rear wing add to the mystique that made this such a popular petrolhead purchase. Handling is excellent, though we found the clutch heavy and understeer evident in tight corners. The other problem with so much grip is getting off the line without the engine bogging down: Maximum revs and some clutch slip are necessities. The taming of the icon over time (today you can buy one with a CVT) has widened its appeal, but took away the hardcore edge. Fuel consumption is poor by today’s standards and worsened by the added friction of the complex drive system. Reliability is excellent, but maintenance pricey when it needs mechanical attention. Naturally, the best colour is blue, with gold wheels.
