BUSINESS CLASS
A brand with an established reputation for keeping occupants safe in its vehicles is broadening its mandate
From the outset of Geely’s ownership of Volvo, the Chinese brand has seemingly encouraged the Gothenburg-based carmaker to further explore its mandate for creating a range of SUVS built around its sophisticated, minimalist ethos. Topped by the XC90, Volvo’s portfolio of products continues to find favour on the global stage, with the all-new EX30 expected to reaffirm this success (see page 46).
The Geely partnership, though, opens possibilities for Volvo to probe previously untapped segments. Sharing its DNA with the Zeekr 009 MPV, also Geely-owned, the new Volvo EM90 is a six-seater luxury people-mover that looks set to challenge the dominance in this category of vehicles such as the Mercedes-benz V-class, most notably the all-electric EQV derivative.
Under consideration for markets outside China (as well as South Africa), the EM90 is equipped with a 116 kwh battery pack. In the Volvo application, it powers a single electric motor positioned on the rear axle. With a usable operating range of up to 740 km, the striking-looking MPV is claimed to be able to sprint from 0–100 km/h in 8,3 seconds.
The battery can be charged from 10–80% in less than half an hour and is capable of bi-directional charging to feed stored energy into a home or even another EV.
Labelled a ‘premium 6-seater’, the EM90’S second row of seating is configured as two captain’s chairs that each feature heating, ventilation and a massage function, as well as a dedicated table and drinks holder. A panoramic sunroof allows natural light into the cabin during the day, with ambient lighting coming into effect in the evening.
It is fitted with a 15,4-inch infotainment display up front, while rear occupants are treated to a 15,6-inch monitor that lowers from the roof to provide ‘in-flight’ entertainment.
