The blunders and bloopers DStv awards viewers missed

A week ago it was all glitz and glam at the second annual DStv Mzansi Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, where, despite the storm outside, the black carpet was fully packed with celebrities and socialites who pulled out all the stops and impressed with their fashion.

Guests trickled into the Sandton International Convention Centre and stopped to get their pictures taken, only to be let down by the shadows cast by the badly lit area and placement of the black carpet. No matter how hard you’d try to avoid having someone’s shadow or your own in the picture, it was almost impossible to get that perfect Instagram shot. Actress and fashion designer Enhle Mbali Maphumulo looked stunning in her soft pink Quiteria and George gown, which she told us was made on the day of the awards.

Then we made our way into the venue at molasses speed, owing to a barely moving queue. But the problems didn’t end outside, when we finally made our way inside we found a number of people standing around awkwardly because their assigned seats were already taken. The confusion was caused by tickets being assigned to guests twice, but the organisers were able to fix the irritation quickly thanks to the Fomo kings and queens who responded, but did not attend.

Thabo “Summary” Kgaphola kept the crowd entertained during ad breaks, but I struggled to find something to even chuckle about in his set. He lacked direction and his content wasn’t that interesting. I didn’t think he was that funny and could not wait for the bills to get paid so that he could leave the stage. A number of nominees were missing during the announcement of the nominees in August and I was hoping that some would pitch for the awards, but sadly only a few made it and sent their thank you speeches via videos that were played during the ceremony.

Host Bonang Matheba looked absolutely ravishing and blessed us with seven different outfits, which were all stunning. She was as professional and perfect as always, even winning the Personality of the Year Award.

The after party was lit, thanks to the Kings Of The Weekend’s set, who got everyone on the dance floor like there was no tomorrow. There ain’t no party like a Mzansi Magic party, I can tell you that much.
