The WELL-CURATED LIFE of Nthabi Taukobong

The Jo’burg based interior decorator shares her love for bold African-inspired design

1. If you visit one hotel, it should be... The Casa Cook on the island of Rhodes, Greece. Think minimalist interiors with a sprinkle of tribal glam. 2. The most iconic piece of design is... The ‘Djinn’ chaise longue for Airborne, designed in the 1960s by Olivier Mourgue. Its simple elegance still makes it relevant in interiors today.

3. The most inspiring artist to watch is... Mohau Modisakeng. He uses his own body to depict powerful historic scenes that occurred in South Africa, but in an Afro-asian interpretation.

4. The Instagrammer to follow is... @asiyami_gold. Daily inspiration, mixed in with paradisiacal scenes, street style and delicious looking food. 5. My favourite sculpture is… ‘Black Hands Whit The Light Signs’ by Italian-senegalese artist Maïmouna Guerresi. 6. I’m currently obsessed with... Roberto Cavalli’s long, exotic kaftans. 7. The most inspiring city in the world is... Marrakesh. When you’re there, visit the Royal Mansour hotel. Its Arabic-andalusian architecture, along with the palatial interior’s intricate tiling details, are spectacular. 8. My favourite piece of local design is... Siyanda Mbele’s ‘Mvelo’ desk, which is made in solid oak and juxtaposes African aesthetics with a contemporary design language. 9. My favourite building is... The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center by Dame Zaha Hadid in Baku, Azerbaijan. 10. My favourite interior designer is... Kelly Wearstler. Her style oozes a no-limits type of approach with bold and expressive pieces that fuses organic-architectural lines and a tropical paradise aesthetic. 11. I don’t go a day without... Writing in my journal. It is a form of meditation for me.
