The Brand When my family immigrated to canada, I gained a heightened consciousness of my nigerian roots. design seemed to be the natural channel for me to express this deep connection. There are negative associations that many people have when they think about countries in africa, which has always bothered me. so, when you are a minority, you feel responsible to showcase a positive side of your culture and Studio Lani is the product of that.

The Inspiration I believe african design is linked to craftsmanship. and since we work mostly in metal, I’m inspired by the masters: el anatsui, Fidelis odogwu and olu amoda. I’m truly in awe of their command of such a difficult material.

The Future In africa, one has to be an adaptable designer. often, my work is redesigned multiple times to navigate challenges and constraints that pop up. Being adaptive can be frustrating but at the same time exciting because it forces you to truly be creative. studio-lani.com
