NICHOLAS COUTTS
Fashion Designer
Fashion designer nicholas Coutts has always had a nimble understanding of both his subject matter and his audience, so it comes as little surprise to see him carving out new niches in both the design and digital spheres. ‘It opens up a plethora of creative possibilities,’ he explains, referencing his latest collection that makes use of digitally printing scans of tapestry motifs onto smooth, flat textiles. ‘By combining traditional methods with hi-tech ones I hope to push my work to different levels in the future,’ he says. The newest of these levels is his ‘Loom’ piece, which debuted at guild this year. Inspired by the postmodern chaise longue and executed in an amalgamation of metal lurex, wool, mohair, karakul, cotton and acrylic, it lands in the sweet spot of the
Venn diagram of nicholas’ ethos: abstraction, luxury and craftsmanship. ‘It seemed a natural progression that gives my work a larger audience,’ he says of the collaboration. ‘specialising in hand-woven textiles, I have always wanted to explore furniture and art. I always felt they would translate well here.’ and playing to the audience isn’t just a lesson, it’s a brand lifestyle. ‘social media is the biggest game-changer,’ he says. ‘There’s an importance to staying relevant through reinvention but also to keeping a continual thread that creates new dynamic realms within the design process. having a global audience is vital to my brand’s dna.’
