BCM earns four Blue Drops
BUFFALO City Metro (BCM) has received four Blue Drop awards for four water systems in the city.
The awards were presented by Water Affairs Minister Edna Molewa at the Water Institute of Southern Africa conference in Cape Town last week. BCM received the awards at the release of the Blue Drop Report in which Molewa flagged two Eastern Cape municipalities, Koukama and Ikwezi, for unsafe drinking water.
The waters systems BCM received the awards for are:
Umzonyana Water Supply System, which covers water supply to East London, Mdantsane and surrounding areas;
The King William’s Town water supply
Nahoon water supply system water supply to Mdantsane; and
Laing Water supply system which covers water supply to Mdantsane, Bisho and rural areas.
A total of 153 water services were sampled and 98 received the Blue Drop Award status. Some of the requirements included risk management, the necessary personnel skills, management commitment and infrastructure.
“The certificate is awarded as an acknowledgement of excellent drinking water quality management which surpasses the requirements of national norms and standards by a significant margin,” Molewa said. — email@example.com
