Cops find body of East London policeman

EAST London police yesterday recovered the body of a fellow officer believed to have died when his body was flung out of a vehicle that overturned on Saturday night.

The accident took

place

in Voortrekke­r Road near Mdantsane around 8pm. A state vehicle was found at the scene but police were unable to find the body.

The search did not continue the following morning.

Finally yesterday, a passerby alerted police to a body lying in short grass not far from where the vehicle had

until been recovered.

The body, clearly visible along Voortrekke­r Road near Mdantsane, was discovered yesterday morning.

Police said the dead policeman was a warrant officer in his early 40s attached to the East London Commercial Crimes Unit.

Police are investigat­ing

a case

of culpable homicide.

Provincial police spokeswoma­n Lieutenant-colonel Sibongile Soci said the accident, together with circumstan­ces leading to the death of the officer, would be investigat­ed.

He could not be named as his next of kin had not yet been notified, Soci said. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
