Pienaar’s sweet hit for Toffees

- By NICK SAID

STEVEN Pienaar signed off his loan spell at Everton in the best possible way, scoring the opening goal for the Toffees as they trounced Newcastle United 3-1 on Sunday.

The Bafana Bafana skipper netted his fourth goal in 14 starts for Everton since joining them on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January, adding further to the calls from the Goodison Park faithful that he should be re-signed on a permanent basis.

The win helped Everton finish seventh in the campaign, above Liverpool, but just one place short of their pre-season target, the European football qualification places.

Calvin Kadi scored goal number 16 of the campaign as he helped Greek second-tier side Veria to a 3-0 win over Agrotikos Asteras. Veria now just need one point from their remaining three matches to seal promotion.

May Mahlangu helped Swedish champions Helsingborg to a 3-2 victory over Hacken on Sunday to give them a muchneeded win as their shaky start to the season continues.

The club have set their sights on the European Champions League group stages next season, but that looks a long way off after just four wins in their 10 Allsvenskan games so far in the campaign.

Bradley Grobler missed the final game of the season for his Turkish side Goztepe as they lost 2-0 to Kartalspor and had to settle for 13th in a campaign when they had hoped to push for promotion.

It was also the final round of matches for those South Africans involved in the Championship playoffs in Belgium, though both Anele Ngcongca and Darren Keet signed off with defeats.
