Teen murder accused given bail

AN 18-year-old John Bisseker High School pupil accused of murder was granted R500 bail in the East London Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Siyanda Thuthu, a Grade 11 pupil at the school, was arrested in Duncan Village on Monday following the death of Silulamile Matheza.

East London police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said Thuthu was alleged to have stabbed Matheza twice in the neck at a local shebeen on Sunday afternoon.

He was declared dead on arrival at the Frere Hospital.

Marais said a woman who is believed to be Thuthu’s mother had gotten into a fight with another woman when her boyfriend, Matheza, tried stopping it.

“It is alleged that the women went away and came back with her children.

“One of them is alleged to have stabbed to death the deceased,” said Marais.

Thuthu, who was not asked to plead, is due in court on June 28. He has been warned not to interfere with police investigations in the matter. — Zwanga Mukhuthu
