Classic tale with modern themes

HUDSON Park High School on Wednesday showcased a theatre production based on Shakespeare’s Othello.

The production, performed by pupils, revolves around themes of racism, love, betrayal and jealousy.

Annetjie de Kock, the production manager, said they chose Othello because it is one of the prescribed matric setworks in the province.

“The varied and very current themes of the story make Othello a popular choice for both theatre and film,” she said.

She said the production would be a valuable learning aid for matrics.

Award-winning director Pierre Perold, who both directed and designed the production, said any director should have at least a couple of years experience before attempting a Shakespeare. “Having been directing plays since 1985, and now approaching half a century in age, I felt ready to direct such a complex production,” he said. He has edited the script slightly but hoped pupils would benefit from the play.

“I hope that after seeing it pupils will have a far better understanding of the story.”

The set is an impressive ancient English castle modernised with special effects and dramatic lighting.

The show opens with a dramatic scene between Iago and Roderigo, played by Matthew Clur and Daniel Kingsley-Hall. Clur’s acting skills are mature for his age and his portrayal of the devious Iago is convincing.

Kingsley-Hall as comic relief made him a favourite with the audience.

Fadzai Simongo did a stellar job as the main character; he has a strong stage presence and grasped the complex nature of Othello.

The show runs until Saturday. Tickets are available at the school.
