Rhino Run is no walk in the Park

- By BOB NORRIS

THE year thus far has had much to offer veteran roadrunners and novices alike.

Distances have varied from 5km to 42.2km and whilst some courses have been fast others have provided a severe test.

There is little doubt however that off-road or trail running is the new adventure for runners, particularly those coming out of self-imposed exile and novices.

Tomorrow, Mpongo Park plays host to the Ashmel Spar Rhino Run by Paws.

The event will give middle-distance runners something to enthuse over as after Easter “organised” roadrunning tends to go somewhat quiet.

Running is an all-year round sport and runners are prepared to travel if needs be.

Two Oceans 56km runners have just a week to their much anticipated race

presented and the hills of Mpongo should serve them well for a last time-trial, giving an honest synopsis of where they are.

The fact that the event will be used to raise funds in aid of the fight to stamp out Rhino poaching goes a long way to providing real “feel-good” for all who participate.

It way well be that many an antelope will be seen in action, but some of the Border-Kei’s leading runners are almost as quick, and they have an advantage that they, like their ancestors, can run all day.

It goes without saying that Hanlie Botha runs like a gazelle and the woman who has beaten all who dared to venture into her zone this year is a pleasure to watch.

Stephanie Smith had a wonderful Buffs Marathon and could also use the nature of this course in preparation of an assault on Comrades.

On offer is a 10km run starting at 7.30am and a 5km walk at 8am.

Entries are available at Total Sports, Vincent Park and Hemingways; Ashmel Spar and Curves, Vincent and Beacon Bay.
