Township honours student killed in crash
DIMBAZA residents yesterday paid tribute to a young German volunteer killed in a motor accident last week.
Luk Klütz, 20, was with three other volunteers from the IJGD volunteer programme (Internationale Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste) – Stephan Ehurm, Tamara Bernardt and Marlon Phillip.
The accident happened on Friday afternoon while they were travelling to a seminar in Port Elizabeth.
According to Ronald Roberts, director of the Hilltop Empowerment Centre – who are in partnership with IJGD – the accident happened outside Cookhouse while the driver Ehurmwas picking up the other volunteers. The four students were set to complete their programme at the end of next month and return to Germany.
The other passengers were not seriously injured, suffering concussion and bruising. They were taken to Greenacres Hospital in Port Elizabeth.
Yesterday the Dimbaza community shared their condolences with the volunteers by hosting a memorial service for Klütz at the Dimbaza Presbyterian Church.
The service was attended by Roberts, the surviving passengers, representatives from schools in Dimbaza as well as the Dimbaza Business Centre where some of the volunteers worked. Klütz’s body is to flown to Germany. The volunteers had planned a coastal tour before returning to Germany, but have now abandoned the plan. —
