votes as opposed to OR Tambo District municipality mayor Dingaan Myolwa with 543 votes. For the position of secretary, Oscar Mabuyane received 759 votes while MPL Michael Peter got 590 votes.

Human Settlements MEC Helen Sauls-August won by 767 votes beating MPL TenTen Pikinini who got 588 to the deputy secretary post.

For the position of treasurer, former BCM mayor Zukiswa Faku’s 575 votes failed to topple transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu’s 772.

An angry Mantashe condemned the wearing of shirts with candidates on, saying they were destroying the ANC. “Having T-shirts bearing the faces of candidates other than that of President [Jacob] Zuma must be discouraged.

“There’s only one ANC president. You have these fake shirts that you were not wearing yesterday. After the result you wear them. If Gcwanini [Masualle] had seen this, he would have condemned it because you are going to destroy the organisation.

“You cannot rub salt in the wounds of those who lost. With national general elections coming up we will need all our forces in the ANC.”

Ahead of the 2007 national elective conference in Polokwane Jacob Zuma supporters burned T-shirts with Thabo Mbeki’s face. The act was condemned by then treasurer Mosioua Lekota.

Before the announcement of results yesterday, supporters of rival groups who lost were not in the conference venue and only returned after the announcement.

Mantashe said members who lost needed to welcome the outcome of the conference positively and congratulate the winner. He warned the newly elected leaders to avoid factionalism.

Nominations for additional members took place late yesterday afternoon while voting started later.
