Border young guns fired up

17 teams to battle for glory

- By ROSS ROCHE

FIVE weeks of intense training and preparation stand the Border Schools’ provincial U13 team in good stead as they head for Durban today to compete in the Bill Stewart Soccer Festival.

Kearsney College play host to the biggest provincial U13 schools’ soccer tournament in the country which sees 17 teams battling it out for glory.

The Border side was selected from 32 schools.

“It was very difficult to choose the best 15-man squad for this prestigious event,” said head coach Deeran Govind.

The team will play a gruelling 16 matches over four days and will be hoping to improve on last year’s showing when they finished a credible fifth out of 16 teams at the festival in Pretoria.

The team will want to emulate or even go one better than the 2011 side which came second overall in Port Elizabeth.

“It is going to be a tough tournament but I believe with the calibre of players we have we can at least make the top four, if not go all the way,” said Govind.
